Omar Nazareth Martinez Rodriguez, a 30-year-old Venezuelan construction worker, was beaten and stabbed to death on Saturday night at the Panda Supermarket on Goed Fortuin Public Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the incident occurred around 19:40 hours.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Rodriguez, who resided at 61 Goed Fortuin, was heading home in a taxi when he was attacked by three men, all of whom were of Venezuelan nationality.
Police said that the suspects rode up on a motorcycle as the taxi approached the Demerara Harbour Bridge roundabout. Two of them got off, opened the car door, and began assaulting Rodriguez inside the vehicle.
The taxi driver managed to drive off with one of the attackers still in the car and stopped at Goed Fortuin, where he pulled the suspect away from Rodriguez and locked the victim in the car for his safety.
The driver reported that he then went into the Panda Supermarket, but while returning to his vehicle, he saw Rodriguez running towards the supermarket.
A 29-year-old security guard on duty at the supermarket told police that Rodriguez was being chased by three identifiable males, who caught up to him at the supermarket’s entrance and began assaulting him again.
One of the suspects, armed with a knife, stabbed Rodriguez several times before the trio fled the scene.
The body of Rodriguez was examined and bore injuries to the right hand, right foot, neck, and chest. His remains were taken to Ezekiel Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.
Acting on information, police officers later apprehended two suspects at La Grange. They are in custody as the investigation continues.
Police are actively pursuing the third suspect.
