Police in Region Nine are investigating an incident that claimed the life of 17-year-old Kelly Raymondo of St. Ignatius Village, Central Rupununi, on Saturday night.
The fatal motorcycle crash occurred sometime between 22:00 hours and 23:30 hours along the Kumu Trail, a rugged route in Central Rupununi, often used to access remote communities.
According to reports, Raymondo had been attending a wedding reception in Kumu Village and was allegedly consuming alcohol with friends. At around 22:00 hrs, she reportedly left the celebration on a motorcycle owned by a 25-year-old woman and proceeded south along the trail at a high speed.
It is suspected that while attempting to cross a bridge along the route, Raymondo lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the western edge. She subsequently plunged over the side into the water below, sustaining severe injuries to her head and body.
About an hour later, around 23:30 hrs, a passerby discovered the teen lying motionless in the water, with the motorcycle found nearby.
Police were informed and responded to the scene. Raymondo was transported to the Lethem Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her body is at the Lethem Hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
