The political ambitions of US-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed are drawing legal and public attention following confirmation that he intends to run for office under a new party: “We Invest in Nationhood.”

A prominent legal expert, speaking on condition of anonymity, has raised concerns about the potential implications of Mohamed or any sanctioned individual holding public office.

“Allowing Azruddin Mohamed to gain a seat in the National Assembly could bring the august house into disrepute,” the expert stated. “He should be prevented at this stage from running for political office, and his party should not be allowed to register to contest the elections.”

On Thursday, Mohamed’s campaign manager and former member of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Charles Sugrim, revealed the party name after a meeting with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

The Commission met with 16 representatives from political parties on Thursday, ahead of the September 1, 2025, polls.

“Holding political office is not a means of evading those sanctions—it could, in fact, place the country in further jeopardy,” the expert added.
Presently, GECOM is accepting symbols from individuals interested in contesting the elections.

Under Guyana’s electoral regulations, parties contesting the elections must submit approved symbols and Lists of Candidates, including a National Top-Up List naming the presidential candidate, with at least 42 candidates and between 300 and 330 nominators nationwide.
