General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, has condemned what he describes as “grudge and greed politics” within the Opposition, saying the constant infighting and shifting allegiances among their leaders show a lack of principles and vision for Guyana’s future.
“What we see now in the Opposition camp is grudge politics, greed politics -pure and simple. Members who lost leadership contests or who have personal grievances are jumping ship and shifting camps just to secure positions for themselves,” Jagdeo said at his press conference on Thursday afternoon.
Jagdeo’s comments came on the heels of former executives of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Sherod Duncan, Juretha Fernandes, and Deonarine (Ricky) Ramsaroop breaking ties with the party to join the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) ahead of the upcoming General and Regional Elections.
Additionally, People’s National Congress Reform member Amanza Walton Desir also broke ties with that party and announced the formation of her new movement.
“It is not about values, policies, or serving the people. It’s about self-preservation and securing a seat in Parliament at any cost.”
Jagdeo pointed out that these actions are not isolated incidents but part of a growing pattern, as Opposition figures who once worked together now openly attack each other and vie for power.
“We’ve seen the same thing time and again, individuals switching sides because they failed to secure a leadership role, or because they were denied a promised position. It’s no longer about Guyana’s future, but about personal gain. That’s what is playing out right now,” he stated.
According to Jagdeo, this environment of distrust and self-interest has led to repeated public squabbles and contradictory statements from Opposition leaders about their plans and alliances.
“Every day, there’s a new version of events. One moment they’re united, the next they’re trading insults. These endless disputes only reinforce that they’re not negotiating for policies or national progress, but for positions and perks,” Jagdeo charged.
He noted that this chaotic state of affairs is ultimately a disservice to ordinary Guyanese, who deserve stable and principled leadership.
“It’s tragic for the country that at such a critical time, the main Opposition is caught up in power struggles and grudge matches, instead of putting forward ideas for Guyana’s development,” Jagdeo said.
He contrasted this with the PPP’s approach, which he said is focused on inclusivity, keeping promises, and delivering for all Guyanese.
“While they are busy with infighting and deflecting blame, we remain focused on empowering people, keeping faith with our supporters, and implementing plans for Guyana’s progress,” he added.
Jagdeo concluded by urging Guyanese not to be distracted by the Opposition’s theatrics, and to look instead at which parties are truly offering a vision of unity and development for the country.
