As preparations intensify for the 2025 General and Regional Elections, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has confirmed receiving 28 party symbol submissions ahead of the June 22, 2025, deadline.
Public Relations Officer Yolanda Ward shared the update on Friday, stating that 16 of the 28 political parties that submitted symbols were represented at a stakeholder engagement held the previous day.
The session, hosted by GECOM, focused on educating parties about procedural requirements as the elections draw closer.
Submitting a symbol is a mandatory step for all parties intending to contest the elections, which are scheduled for September 1, 2025.
Under Section 16(1) of the Representation of the People Act, Cap. 1:03, political parties must submit both hard and electronic copies of their proposed symbol.
Applications must be enclosed in sealed envelopes clearly marked: “Application for Symbol – General and Regional Elections – 2025” and addressed to The Chairman, GECOM, 41 High and Cowan Streets, Kingston, Georgetown.
Parties also have the option of submitting their electronic versions via GECOM’s official portal at https://gecom.org.gy/public/home/gre2025/symbols, or by scanning the QR code provided in official notices.
Deputy Chief Elections Officer Aneal Giddings explained that symbol disqualification is rare, but similarities between designs can raise concerns.
He said that if two submitted symbols are found to be similar, the party that submitted theirs later may be required to make modifications.
Approval of the submitted symbols is anticipated by July 4, 2025.
