The family of 22-year-old Stacy Walton from New Amsterdam, Berbice, is demanding justice after accusing her ex-partner of murder following her tragic drowning in an alleged car accident.

Stacy’s mother, Kate Walton, expressed deep anguish over the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death. She disclosed that Stacy had previously spoken about suffering abuse at the hands of her ex-partner.

“He says he rescued my daughter, but then you hear it was public-spirited citizens. Right now, I want justice for my daughter because it’s not easy for parents and siblings to go through this,” Kate said tearfully.

Stacy’s father, Raoul Walton, has also rejected the official account of an accident, saying that bruises on her body suggest she was a victim of violence.

“There are bruises on her back, on her side; it looks like she was punched. Her hand is swollen with marks of violence. Yes, water in the lungs means drowning, but many things can happen before drowning. It could be a hit and fall, or even strangulation. This is not just drowning — this is murder,” he stated firmly.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had said that on Friday, June 20, Stacy was reportedly driving along No. 7 Public Road, East Coast Berbice, when she lost control of her vehicle, which ended up in a trench. She was rescued by bystanders and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

A post-mortem examination conducted on June 22 confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia and drowning. However, the family remains convinced that foul play was involved.

The police have since revealed that Stacy’s ex-partner, Alfred De Jonge, owner of the car she was driving, is to be charged and will be arraigned at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court.

Kate pleaded, “I know the pain my daughter must have felt before she closed her eyes. I am begging for justice for her.” Stacy was a mother to a young daughter.
