The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) held a fundraising dinner last week in Leonora, Region Three, drawing a crowd of approximately 8,000 people, with an additional 2,000 unable to attend due to heavy traffic congestion.

Speaking on the event’s success, General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said no other political party in Guyana or the wider Caribbean could have managed an event of such scale and complexity.

“This fundraiser demonstrated the maturity and strength of our party,” Dr. Jagdeo said at his weekly press conference on Thursday.

“The tens of thousands who supported this event, including nearly 1,500 volunteers, worked diligently to feed thousands of people and handle logistics within a very short timeframe. I dare say no other political party could have pulled off an event of that magnitude the way we did.”

The overwhelming turnout, however, brought unexpected challenges. Traffic jams plagued the roads leading to Leonora, with some stretches temporarily seeing four lanes of traffic moving in one direction on what is normally a two-lane road.

Dr. Jagdeo personally experienced delays despite travelling with sirens and apologised to all attendees affected by the congestion.

Similar large-scale dinners were recently held in Region Four at Everest, and another major fundraiser is planned on the lawns of the Arthur Chung Conference Centre on Friday.

According to Dr. Jagdeo, these events are not only important for fundraising but also illustrate the strong public support the party enjoys across the country.

“The fact that so many people come out, even when they cannot give large sums, shows the confidence Guyanese have in the PPP/C and the positive changes since we took office,” he added.
