Police have arrested 84-year-old Hubert Campbell during an operation at Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, after he was found in possession of an unlicenced 9mm pistol and 30 grams of marijuana.
At approximately 15:30 hours on Thursday, ranks from the Highway Patrol Base acted on information received and proceeded to Lot 124, Yarrowkabra, where they made contact with Campbell, a shopkeeper and pensioner residing at the location.
Upon identifying themselves, the police noted that Campbell behaved suspiciously, sitting on a bench under a shed at his place of business. When officers requested to search him, he initially refused and became disorderly. After being warned, Campbell complied and allowed the search to proceed.
The police found a Taurus 9mm pistol loaded with five live rounds in the magazine on his person. When questioned, Campbell admitted he did not hold a licence for the firearm or ammunition.
A further search of the shop, conducted in Campbell’s presence, uncovered leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis. The cannabis weighed 30 grams.
Campbell was informed of the offences, cautioned, and arrested. He was taken to the Timehri Police Station, where he remains in custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
