Arson is under investigation following the destruction of a house and a car by fire on Wednesday evening.

In an interview with reporters, Keith Chester, a resident of Lot 164, 56 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, detailed the alarming events of June 25, 2025.

Chester said he had left home around 20:00 hours to attend a wake nearby. Within minutes, he received the devastating news that his house was engulfed in flames, prompting him to rush back to the scene.

Chester recounted that when he arrived home, he saw neighbours rushing to extinguish the blaze on the car. He added that the flames had destroyed the ceiling, and everything upstairs had been burned.

Prompt action from the New Amsterdam Fire Station ensured that firefighters arrived quickly to manage the blaze and prevent further damage.

Chester revealed that this was not the first attempt to set his property on fire; three years prior, someone had tried to burn down his house while he was away, which resulted in complete destruction.

“Is nah nobody far, is somebody from right around the area because nobody far wouldn’t come and do this. Is somebody from not far. Is people from right around here try to burn down me house because they see I progressing all the time,” he stated.
