A fisherman was recently remanded to prison after being charged with murder related to an incident that occurred at a wedding house in Region Six in 2016.
Dave Ramnauth, known as “Shandy,” a 28-year-old fisherman of Lot ‘B’ 21 Portuguese Quarter, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Michelle Mathias on Thursday.
It is alleged that between the night of Saturday, January 16, and the early hours of Sunday, January 17, 2016, at Williamsburg Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Ramnauth murdered Surendra Nauth, known as “Sham.”
During the court proceedings, Ramnauth was not required to plead to the indictable charge. Magistrate Mathias remanded him to prison.
The incident reportedly occurred around 12:10 hours at a wedding house in Williamsburg, Corentyne. Nauth and his brother-in-law had an argument with a man who allegedly slashed a tire on their vehicle.
During the altercation, the accused reportedly attacked them with a knife, stabbing Nauth in the abdomen and wounding the brother-in-law in the forehead. Both men were taken to New Amsterdam Hospital, but Nauth later died from his injuries.
After the incident, the Police identified Ramnauth as the suspect, who was believed to have fled to Suriname in 2016. However, on June 23, he was arrested at a house in Stanleytown.
He is scheduled to appear again on July 17, 2025, with the case transferred to the Albion Magistrates’ Court for reports and statements.
