An accident has claimed the life of 78-year-old Winston Hibbert at Long Creek, along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway on Sunday.
Police reports reveal that Hibbert was riding a black and red motorcycle with registration CG 8545 at about 15:30 hours.
The motorcycle was travelling northbound on the western lane at a high speed when the rider lost control, striking a concrete kerb on the western side of the road. The collision caused him to be thrown from the bike, suffering severe head and bodily injuries.
Eyewitnesses indicated that Hibbert had been attending a funeral in the community earlier and had been consuming alcohol prior to the accident. It was also confirmed that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Emergency responders found Hibbert in a semi-conscious state. He was transported by a passing vehicle to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was examined by medical personnel. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
The Police have taken custody of the body, which has been placed in cold storage at the Linden Hospital Complex Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
