Minister of Education Priya Manickchand, during a speech at the opening ceremony of the newly rebuilt St. George School of Science, announced that another secondary school is set to open in three weeks.
Referring to the new Christ Church Secondary and the new Saint George’s Secondary, the Minister announced that St. Mary’s High will be reopened and renamed Brickdam Secondary School, emphasising the evolving quality of education being delivered.
“The new St. Mary’s Secondary will become the new Brickdam Secondary. We’re changing the kind of education that we offer, the quality of education, beginning with trained teachers,” said Minister Manickchand.
The modern, three-storey facility will accommodate over 600 students and features a range of classrooms, including ICT, science and technology, home economics, and industrial arts. These are located on the top floor, with 12 classrooms on the middle floor and six laboratories on the ground floor.
Following the signing ceremony in June 2023, the construction work was divided into six lots to expedite completion.
General Construction Inc. (K&S) was awarded the contract for Lot One, valued at $286.194 million, responsible for constructing the superstructure. The company was also awarded the $135.59 million contract for Lot Two block works.
A. Ograsein and Sons General Contracting received the award for Lot Three, which includes plumbing work, and Lot Five, which involves external work, valued at $33.38 million and $12.97 million, respectively.
For the electrical work on Lot Four, Cummings Electrical Company Ltd. was awarded a contract worth $25.868 million. For the finishing work on Lot Six, R&D Engineering Services received a contract valued at $66.663 million.
St. Mary’s High School was demolished due to its dilapidated condition and was closed in 2016. Its students were relocated to an East La Penitence location.
To date, the facility has been completed in accordance with the estimated time of completion.
