Businessman Azruddin Mohamed

The Full Court of Demerara on Monday refused an application by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) to overturn an existing injunction.

The injunction prevents the agency from seizing several luxury vehicles belonging to U.S.-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed and his family, pending the outcome of a tax evasion case against them.

The bench comprised Chief Justice (ag) Roxane George, SC, and High Court Judge Nareshwar Harnanan. The Mohameds were represented by Attorneys-at-Law Siand Dhurjon and Damian Da Silva.

A team of lawyers represented the GRA, including Senior Counsel Anand Ramlogan—former Senator and Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago—Senior Counsel Robin Stoby, Maritha Halley, Judy Stuart-Adonis, Jason Moore, Fiona Hamilton, Ornise Gordon, and Nicklin Belgrave.

In April 2025, High Court Judge Gino Persaud granted an injunction barring the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) from detaining or seizing four luxury vehicles owned by the Mohamed family.

The vehicles include a Toyota Land Cruiser PAB 3000, a Toyota Land Cruiser PAB 4000, a Lamborghini Aventador PZZ 4000, and a Ferrari 488 PAD 5000. The GRA claims that the vehicles were significantly undervalued at the time of importation, resulting in the Mohameds paying less taxes than legally required.

As a result, the GRA is seeking a court order compelling the family to pay an additional $1.2 billion in taxes on the luxury vehicles.Following the Full Court’s decision, the Mohameds will retain possession of the vehicles pending the outcome of the substantive case before Justice Gino Persaud.

Whether the GRA will appeal the Full Court’s ruling to the Court of Appeal remains unclear.
