A 26-year-old Kitty, Georgetown welder has been remanded to prison on an attempted murder charge following a stabbing that left a man critically injured.

Alvin Grannum, of Da Silva Street, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Friday.

He is accused of stabbing 32-year-old Dennis Narine multiple times in the chest with a pair of scissors during a violent altercation on July 1 at Republic Street, Kitty.

According to the police prosecutor, the men were involved in a scuffle when Grannum armed himself with the weapon and launched the attack. Narine was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he remains in critical condition in the male surgical ward.

The court heard that Grannum confessed to the act in a video and audio-recorded interview with investigators. The prosecution objected to bail, highlighting the seriousness of the offence, the nature of the weapon used, and the victim’s current critical state.

Magistrate McGusty denied bail, noting the gravity of the allegations and the need to protect the victim. She indicated that if Narine’s condition improves, the defence may apply for bail at the next hearing.

Grannum was not required to plead to the indictable charge. The case was adjourned to August 8 for updates on the victim’s health.
