Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, has reaffirmed the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government’s commitment to ensuring that national resources are distributed equitably across Guyana.
He made the statement during last week’s commissioning of the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court in Region Two, where he noted that equity in governance has been a core principle of the PPP/C since its return to office in 1992.
“Successive governments of the PPP/C have always ensured that, in our developmental plans and programmes, there is always an equitable distribution of resources,” Nandlall said.
“We did not always have the number of resources which we are blessed with now. Since 1992, the PPP/C has always ensured that whatever little resources we had were spent across the country, wherever our population resides.”
He explained that the government has always used a population-based approach to resource allocation, ensuring that areas with larger population concentrations receive a greater share of investments, regardless of ethnicity or location.
To reinforce his point, the Attorney General cited the transformation of the Anna Regina Secondary School.
“Thirty to 40 years ago, it was a school designed to accommodate students who were less academically endowed, and it was primarily a technical and vocational institution,” he said.
He noted that, in the past, strong academic performance was limited to urban schools.
However, he said institutions like Anna Regina Secondary School have become leading performers at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) level.
“I give you that example to illustrate the benefits our government’s policies have brought across the length and breadth of our country,” he added.
Nandlall also pointed to the state-of-the-art hospital under construction in Lima, Essequibo Coast, being built to European standards.
“It will perform all major surgeries and complex, sophisticated medical procedures that are currently available in Georgetown—you can do them right there on the Essequibo Coast,” he said.
He added that similar hospitals have already been commissioned in Region Four.
The PPP/C’s developmental agenda is focused on inclusive growth, aiming to uplift all regions of Guyana through strategic investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, housing, and social services.
