Three serving members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), who were previously remanded for allegedly stealing cocaine from the Ruimveldt Police Station, were each granted $250,000 bail when they returned to court on Wednesday.
Constable Grenville Harris, 26, of South Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara (ECD); Corporal Floyd Pellew, 39, of Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara (WCD); and Corporal Latchman Singh, of Weldaad, West Coast Berbice (WCB), are jointly charged with larceny.
They appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer the indictable charge, which they were not required to plead.
The alleged offence occurred on March 13, 2025, while the trio was stationed at the Ruimveldt Police Station.
Prosecutors allege that the officers conspired to steal approximately 400 grammes of cocaine, valued at $360,000, from a strongbox where it was being held as evidence in an active drug trafficking case.
The prosecution had initially objected to bail, citing concerns over obstruction of justice and interference with witnesses.
They claimed the officers tampered with the evidence and noted that CCTV footage shows Corporal Pellew removing parcels from the strongbox and passing them to the other two ranks.
Additional footage reportedly shows the men entering the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) office with a bag and later returning without it.
The missing narcotics were discovered during a routine check by Sergeant Johnson, who noticed the seal on the evidence box had been broken.
It was later confirmed that the original quantity of 4.9 kilogrammes of cocaine had been reduced to 4.5 kilogrammes.
Despite earlier objections by the prosecutor, bail was granted on Wednesday after the policemen’s attorneys successfully renewed their applications. The matter has been adjourned to June 11, 2025.
