The government’s push to preserve and promote Guyana’s Indigenous culture received another boost on Friday as Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne announced plans for a special business fund to support Indigenous communities with easier access to financing.

Minister Browne made the disclosure during an engagement with several Amerindian cultural groups at the Sophia Exhibition Centre, where discussions centered on youth development, cultural preservation, and the challenges of securing funding in hinterland areas.

According to the minister, the initiative will provide loans at zero percent interest to help Indigenous people launch businesses that not only generate income but also strengthen traditional practices. “We’ll be creating a business fund where you can be able to access loans at 0 per cent interest to start a business,” she said, adding that communities must organise themselves to make full use of the facility.

She further explained that while the fund will prioritise projects connected to tourism and culture, additional avenues of support will be made available for youth-driven ventures.

Representatives of cultural groups welcomed the opportunity to share their experiences and outline visions for preserving Indigenous heritage, noting the importance of structured support for creative and entrepreneurial pursuits.

Minister Browne assured that her ministry will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to ensure Indigenous creativity, traditions, and entrepreneurship receive recognition and support at the national level.

She also commended the young performers who showcased their talents during Amerindian Heritage Month, encouraging them to remain active in Village Council meetings to ensure their voices and concerns are heard.
