President Dr. Irfaan Ali told world leaders at the United Nations on Tuesday that Guyana is proving economic growth and environmental stewardship can go “hand in hand”, and is now moving to position itself as a global hub for artificial intelligence (AI).

He pointed to Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030, under which the country has become the first in the world to be certified under the REDD+ Environmental Excellence Standard and a successful seller of carbon credits.

“Nature has tangible value and innovation and responsibility can and must be rewarded,” Ali said, while urging the international community to deliver predictable climate financing to support adaptation and resilience.

On the energy front, the President highlighted Guyana’s ambitious plan to use natural gas as a “bridge away from heavy fuel oil,” while ramping up investments in hydropower, wind, solar, and other renewables to cut electricity costs and ensure universal access.

President Ali also revealed that Guyana is preparing to leverage its gas-to-energy project to launch a hyperscale AI data center, a first for a country of its size.

“Large AI data centers are rarely found in similar sized territories. As such, implementing a project of this scale is of immense pride for Guyana,” the President said. He added that the facility will accelerate digitization, modernize government services, and bring new job opportunities.

While acknowledging the transformative power of AI, Ali cautioned that “there is no clarity on equity, access and applicability,” and pressed for regulations and ethical standards.

“Guyana is quickly becoming one of the world’s largest energy producers per capita, carefully balancing its green footprint with energy production,” Ali said.
