Guyana’s health leadership took center stage at the UNGA Life Sciences event, themed “NCDs and Mental Health: Legislative Leadership for a Global Turning Point.” Honourable Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony shared remarks, underscoring how strong legal frameworks and public health programmes can transform lives. In his address, Minister Anthony pointed to tangible examples from Guyana:

HEARTS for Cardiovascular Diseases: rolled out nationwide to strengthen prevention, detection, and management of hypertension

and related conditions.

Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative: launched to screen, vaccinate, and treat women across regions.

Legislation on Tobacco Control, Mental Health & Suicide Prevention: passed to protect public health, curb risks, and provide

support systems.

School Health Programme: operational screening of children before nursery, primary, and secondary school entry to detect health issues early on.

“These initiatives show that legislative leadership can save lives,” Minister Anthony emphasized.

He challenged global peers and urged that laws and policies should aim not only to reduce long-term fiscal burdens but to save lives now. Guyana’s presence at the UNGA “Life Sciences” forum and its record of legislative and programmatic action demonstrate its commitment to being a proactive leader among nations facing rising burdens of NCDs and mental health challenges.
