Dry season affecting water supply in Region One- GWI
Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has announced that the prolonged dry season is taking a toll on water supply in several hinterland communities, particularly in Region One.
According to the company, a number of surface water sources have dried up, forcing adjustments to pumping schedules in areas like Santa Rosa. Residents there have already experienced changes to their delivery times, but GWI assured that the measures are temporary.
To cushion the impact and strengthen the system in the long term, GWI said it has stepped up its groundwater programme. A new well has been completed in Rincon, while another is underway in Mora. Two more wells are also being drilled in the Santa Rosa Islands, and works are expected to advance in the coming month.
These are aimed at reducing reliance on surface water and providing a more stable supply.
Meanwhile, officials said they are closely monitoring other critical sources, including the Mabaruma Springs, which have also shown reduced water levels. Residents in affected areas are being urged to conserve and use water wisely until conditions improve.
GWI has promised continued updates as works progress, while reaffirming its commitment to providing safe and reliable service to hinterland communities.
