President Ali proposes a regional Red Crescent office in Guyana
-Long-term partnership with Qatar to strengthen disaster response and healthcare links
President Irfaan Ali has proposed the establishment of a Red Crescent office for the Western Hemisphere right here in Guyana, as part of ongoing collaboration with Qatar.
Speaking at a dinner held on Sunday in honour of the visiting Qatar Red Crescent Medical Convoy, President Ali said the move would strengthen regional capacity to respond to natural disasters while deepening ties between the two nations.
“We want to set up the Red Crescent office in the Western Hemisphere here in Guyana, and we’re willing to partner from an administrative perspective and also from a technical perspective with the skills that we will be developing,” the President stated.
He explained that Guyana’s location and vulnerability to natural disasters make it an ideal base to coordinate humanitarian support across the region. “We know we live in a region that is susceptible to natural disasters, and we want to be able to also build our capacity to help our brothers and sisters in the region in time of need,” President Ali added.
The Head of State also noted that discussions have already begun to establish a long-term partnership with the Qatari team, including regular medical and humanitarian interventions. “The team is already working on a long-term relationship that will have a program intervention, if not every four months, twice per year,” he said.
