Driver who crashed into Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara Bridge will pay for repairs – AG
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, says the motorist who collided with the median on the eastern approach to the new Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge will be required to compensate the State for the damage.
Speaking on his “Issues in the News” programme on Tuesday night, Nandlall confirmed that the matter is under police investigation while engineers assess the extent of the damage and calculate the cost of repairs.
Once the assessment is completed, the Attorney General’s Chambers will issue a demand letter to the driver identified as being responsible, he said.
“If the demand is not satisfactorily met, further legal proceedings will follow,” Nandlall stated, adding that the administration’s approach is consistent with previous cases in which the government successfully recovered funds for the destruction of public property.
The AG stressed that the policy will be applied “even-handedly,” noting that equal treatment under the law requires those who “wantonly, negligently, or recklessly” damage public infrastructure to bear the cost of restoration.
The driver involved in Monday morning’s crash is hospitalised with broken limbs.
