Politician and Farmer Nabbed in Police Drug Bust
Police in Linden have arrested a politician and a farmer after 310.71 kilograms of cannabis were discovered in a minibus during a routine patrol on Monday night.
According to reports, at about 20:41 hrs on October 20, 2025, a police team conducting mobile patrol duties in the vicinity of the Old Bamia Police Checkpoint stopped a dark blue Toyota Hiace minibus bearing registration number BAJ 4486, registered to the Region 10 Tourism Committee Inc.
The vehicle was driven by 39-year-old Devin Sears, an educator and political activist from Mackenzie, Linden, who was accompanied by 69-year-old Albert Sandy, a farmer from Tacama Waterfront, Upper Berbice River.
Police said the driver began acting suspiciously and sweating profusely when stopped. When questioned about the vehicle’s contents, he reportedly told officers that he was “transporting tourism plants.” Officers then instructed him to pull over for a search.
During the search, police discovered 22 bulky black plastic bags and four large brown canvas bags containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.
Both men were told of the offence, arrested, and cautioned. While Sears remained silent, Sandy allegedly admitted ownership of the narcotics, claiming he had paid Sears to transport him to Parika.
The men, along with the suspected narcotics, were escorted to the Mackenzie Police Station. The substance was weighed in their presence and confirmed to total 310.71 kilograms.
Both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
