Arson is suspected after a fishing boat owned by Sherilyn Bhagwandin, 36, of Alness Village, Corentyne Berbice,

was set ablaze early Wednesday at the Adventure Landing site.

Sherilyn told reporters that she learned of the fire from another boat owner and, along with her husband, Manie Bhagwandin, went to the scene at approximately 8:00 am. She said they reported the incident to the Whim Police Station after conducting an investigation.

The couple, who rely on fishing for their livelihood and have three children, stated that they employed four crew members for their fishing trips.

The boat, equipped with a 60 Yamaha engine, seine nets, an ice box, and gasoline, suffered an estimated $8 million in damages.

Manie noted that all seine nets were destroyed, expressing concern over their financial future.

Berbice Divisional Fire Officer Thom Fernandez confirmed that the fire was maliciously set, and firefighters prevented further damage to parts of the vessel.

The couple hopes for a swift police investigation to identify the perpetrators.
