Quick action by firefighters on Thursday morning helped avert a major disaster after a fire broke out at a three-storey building in Tain Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) received a report of the blaze at approximately 05:01 hours on Thursday.

In response, two fire tenders were immediately dispatched – one from the Rose Hall Fire Station and another from the New Amsterdam Fire Station.
Upon arrival, the firefighters were met with heavy smoke and flames engulfing parts of the structure, which is owned by Sudesh Ramdholl.
McDonald reported that while the building’s third and ground floors sustained severe damage, the garage was completely destroyed, along with its contents, including a vehicle and various electrical components.
The Divisional Officer credited the swift and strategic intervention by the first unit from Rose Hall with preventing a larger conflagration.
Investigations later revealed that the fire was caused by a lithium-ion battery that had overheated, igniting nearby combustible materials.
