The Government of Guyana plans to take action against contractors who are lagging behind on bridge construction in Region Six.

During an outreach event in New Amsterdam, Berbice on Thursday, President Dr. Irfaan Ali expressed his surprise that liquidated damages haven’t yet been imposed on these contractors.

“It seems to me that these contractors are not fully invested in finishing these bridges,” he remarked.

The President stated that he has directed the Permanent Secretary and the Procurement head to implement measures ensuring that these contractors are not awarded any new projects until the bridges are completed.

“I have asked the finance secretary to examine if the project engineers are delinquent in the management of the project from an administrative perspective, that is, ensuring all the administrative requirements are in place, allowing the Government to take action. If they are not in place, the finance secretary is aware of the powers vested in the system for action to be taken, and action will be taken,” President Ali asserted.

With the ongoing four-lane expansion of the Corentyne Highway, several bridges are being constructed to align with the road development.
