Guyana’s strengthening ties with the United Kingdom were highlighted this week as the fifth UK Trade Delegation arrived in Georgetown to explore new investment opportunities across several key sectors.Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, welcomed the visiting team during a reception at the Marriott Hotel on Tuesday. The delegation includes British companies interested in partnerships in areas such as construction, education, and logistics. It also marks the first visit to Guyana by Paulette Hamilton, the newly appointed UK Member of Parliament and Trade Envoy to the Commonwealth Caribbean. The mission is being coordinated by the British High Commission alongside the Caribbean Council, the British Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry.Dr. Singh noted that previous trade engagements have already delivered strong outcomes, with almost half of visiting UK companies closing deals or establishing partnerships in Guyana, a success he credited to the rapid growth of the local economy and the efforts of international and local business agencies. He emphasised that while oil and gas continue to expand, with Guyana now producing approximately 900,000 barrels per day, the government remains focused on building a strong, diversified economy. The Finance Minister pointed out that sectors such as mining, including bauxite and manganese, continue to provide important opportunities for long-term development.According to Dr. Singh, the arrival of continued UK trade interest demonstrates confidence in Guyana’s future. He assured the delegation that the government is dedicated to advancing partnerships that encourage resilience, economic expansion, and environmental responsibility.Despite its booming oil industry, Guyana remains a net carbon sink due to its vast forests, a commitment the administration says it will uphold as national development accelerates.
