8,000+ patients treated since opening of De Kinderen Regional Hospital
Since its official opening on August 11, the De Kinderen Regional Hospital in Region Three has already provided medical care to more than 8,000 patients, highlighting its critical role in improving healthcare access outside the capital.
The facility has recorded over 500 visits to its radiology department, treated approximately 100 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and welcomed around 100 newborns, including 11 births just over the past weekend.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali made an unannounced visit to the hospital on Saturday, meeting with patients, their families, and staff.
During his tour, he engaged with relatives of patients receiving treatment for various ailments.
One family member described the care provided as “excellent,” while another praised the President for the surprise visit, encouraging more such interactions.
Several others also expressed satisfaction with the hospital’s facilities, noting that they were “good” and well-maintained.
Speaking with hospital staff, President Ali was briefed on patient management and services.
He learned that each doctor attends to about 25 patients per shift during the day and two patients per night. The radiology department performs an average of 10 CT scans daily.
Previously, patients in the region had to travel to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for such services, underscoring the importance of local access to advanced healthcare.
The President commended the staff for their dedication and professionalism, emphasising the significance of delivering quality medical care close to home.
The $6.6 billion hospital boasts a comprehensive range of modern facilities designed to meet diverse healthcare needs.
It has 75 inpatient beds, each equipped with air-conditioned rooms and private bathrooms, ensuring comfort and privacy for patients.
The hospital includes two operating theatres and a minor theatre, capable of handling various surgical procedures.
Critical care services are available around the clock, with a 24-hour Accident and Emergency Department, alongside continuously operating pharmacy and laboratory services.
Its imaging suite, which includes a CT scanner, digital X-ray, and ultrasound, supports both routine and complex diagnostic needs.
Specialized care units further strengthen the hospital’s capacity to treat patients across the medical spectrum.
These include a delivery ward, ICU, High Dependency Unit (HDU), and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), providing appropriate care for everyone—from newborns to critically ill adults.
The De Kinderen Regional Hospital represents a major milestone in the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare for all Guyanese citizens.
By bringing high-quality medical services closer to communities in Region Three, the facility reduces the need for long-distance travel to the capital and ensures that residents have timely access to essential healthcare services.
