Attorney General Anil Nandlall, S.C., says government is moving ahead with stronger enforcement measures to reduce speeding and save lives on Guyana’s roadways.

Speaking on his weekly Issues in the News programme, Nandlall said the high number of fatal accidents and the “great misuse and negligent use of our public roadways” continue to be matters of major concern.

He noted that the recently introduced e-ticketing system, which targets speeding and non-wearing of seat belts, has already proven successful.

“I have no doubt that when the statistics are properly analyzed, one will see a reduction in vehicular accidents and traffic accidents generally on our roads,” he stated.

However, he added that more reforms are already being prepared.

According to Nandlall, government will review regulations for driver licences, including for different classes of vehicles such as lorries, expand the list of ticketable offences so motorists can be ticketed for a wider range of road violations, and impose harsher penalties for speeding as part of the new legislative reforms.

He emphasised that these actions are being taken in the public interest and will continue to be closely monitored as Guyana works to improve road safety.

“These are matters that we will continuously monitor very closely and make reforms when we think that it is in the public interest to do so,” Nandlall said.

The Attorney General assured viewers that more updates will be provided as the reforms advance.
