Police in Berbice are probing a late-night crash along the Alness Public Road that claimed the life of a Corentyne man. The accident occurred around 11:20 on Thursday night when the driver of motor car PWW 6986 reportedly lost control while speeding and under the influence.

The car, driven by a 31-year-old man from John’s Settlement, was heading east in the northern lane when it overturned. During the crash, passenger Davendra Sydney, 30, of Bush Lot Village, was flung from the vehicle and landed on the southern grass verge. The car eventually came to a stop on a nearby bridge.

Both men were picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital. Sydney was pronounced dead on arrival and later taken to Ramoo’s Funeral Home as a post-mortem is to be conducted. The driver, who suffered several contusions, was admitted for observation.

Police say a breathalyzer test returned readings of 77 and 74 micrograms, more than double the legal limit of 35 micrograms. The investigation is ongoing.
