President Dr. Irfaan Ali has called on citizens to celebrate responsibly this festive season, reminding that the joy of Christmas means nothing if lives are put at risk on the road. Speaking at the opening of the Christmas Village on Main Street, the President urged motorists to slow down and stop endangering others, emphasising that safety must remain the number-one priority for families enjoying the season.
He stressed that every Guyanese has a responsibility to protect their own lives and the lives of others while travelling, noting that arriving alive is more important than anything else. He appealed for respect and care on the road, saying this should be done for children, families, and all who share the roadways.
Throughout his address, President Ali celebrated the Christmas Village as a space where unity and national pride shine. He expressed gratitude to the organisers, cultural groups, private sector supporters, performers, and volunteers who transformed the avenue into a festive showcase of Guyanese creativity and hospitality.
The President emphasised that the Village was designed so every Guyanese, from any region or walk of life, can experience the magic of Christmas, through food, art, music, and togetherness. He highlighted a new feature this year, a farmers’ Christmas market at the seawalls led by the First Lady. He also encouraged strong support for local entrepreneurs, reminding that buying Guyanese products uplifts families and strengthens communities.
Dr. Ali said Christmas should inspire more compassion towards the vulnerable, including the elderly, differently abled, and children who depend on society for support. He noted that government investments in social programmes and holiday initiatives are not charity but national responsibility, as true prosperity must reach every household.
Reflecting on Guyana’s rapid transformation, from new roads and bridges to developments in housing, health, and tourism, the President said progress must always be felt by citizens, not only reported in headlines. He expressed confidence that the coming year will bring even greater opportunities powered by the talent and brilliance of the Guyanese people.
“My fellow Guyanese, hope is alive tonight. The cash grant is alive and well, unity is alive tonight. Support for your home ownership is alive and well. Let us carry that spirit into the new year as Guyana’s best days are the ones we choose to build together,” the President stated.
As he closed his message, President Ali encouraged Guyanese to be present in their communities, homes, and relationships, saying the greatest gift anyone can give this season is kindness and genuine connection. He ended by reaffirming support from his administration, wishing everyone, even the naysayers, the richest blessings.
