Ranks from the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) were honoured on Thursday for their outstanding work over the past year, as the department hosted its Annual Christmas Luncheon and Award Ceremony at the Police Officers’ Mess Annexe. The activity, chaired by Superintendent Elton Baird, highlighted the unit’s achievements and the efforts of ranks who helped maintain high standards across all divisions.
Baird noted that the awards have lifted morale throughout the force and credited the ranks for their dedication. He pointed out that while the department still has more to accomplish, the progress made so far shows a clear commitment to accountability and excellence.
According to the Superintendent, complaints against police officers dropped in 2025, with 340 reports received compared to 381 the previous year, a reduction of just over ten percent. Of these, 285 matters were fully investigated and forwarded for legal advice, 45 were unsubstantiated, and 55 are still being probed, giving the department an 83.2 percent completion rate.
The OPR also saw an increase in both departmental and criminal charges, signalling tougher enforcement and stronger accountability measures. Training continued to be a major focus, with ranks benefiting from local and overseas courses. Plans for 2026 include expanded training in photography, videography, and cybercrime investigations to further strengthen operations. Public outreach will remain ongoing through engagements in every division and continued use of radio, television, social media, and other forums.
Deputy Commissioner of Administration Ravindradat Budhram praised the department’s contributions and underscored its importance in upholding accountability within the force. He also acknowledged the top performers at OPR headquarters. Inspectors Quinn Sandy, Chaitram Sewsankar, and Corporal Annamaria Hercules each received $25,000, while nine ranks in total were rewarded with cash and gifts. Several others were recognised with plaques and monetary awards for exceptional service.
