A Demerara High Court jury has convicted 36-year-old Mark Rodney in connection with a brutal stabbing that nearly claimed a man’s life in Ituni in 2023.

The unanimous verdict was delivered before Justice Jacqueline Josiah-Graham, bringing to a close a trial centred on a violent confrontation that erupted on December 18, 2023.

Rodney had been charged with attempted murder, with jurors also considering an alternative count of wounding with intent.

The prosecution team comprised attorneys Marisa Edwards, Joy Williams, and Darin Chan, while Rodney was defended by attorney Adrian Thompson.

Sentencing has been set for January 28, 2026.

Evidence revealed that the victim, Keon Liverpool, then 38, was on his way to visit his sister when an argument broke out near the home of Rodney’s fiancée, Charlene Piggot.

Residents in the vicinity reported hearing raised voices and witnessing the exchange moments before it turned violent.

Liverpool was stabbed twice during the incident, suffering injuries to his arm and abdomen.

The abdominal wound was particularly severe, measuring about eight centimetres and puncturing the abdominal cavity, causing his intestines to protrude.

Despite his injuries, Liverpool managed to flee but was chased and eventually collapsed in a nearby yard.

He was first taken to the Linden Medical Complex and later rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he underwent emergency medical care.

A doctor who gave evidence at the trial told the court that the abdominal injury was life-threatening and was consistent with being inflicted by a sharp object such as a knife.
