Police in Region Six have arrested three suspects who have admitted to their involvement in the robbery and fatal attack on two Chinese nationals at Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice, which claimed the life of 61-year-old businessman Chen Yongping.

Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus, in an update to Berbice media, confirmed that the suspects—a 17-year-old male of Bun Bush Dam, Canje, and two 29-year-old males of the Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme—were arrested on Monday, December 29, 2025, based on information received. He said the individuals were cautioned and interviewed, during which they made admissions.

The attack occurred on Monday, December 22, 2025, at about 5:00 a.m., as the victims—Chen Yongping and 32-year-old Cheng Dongrong, who jointly operated a chips business—were returning home after purchasing cassava at the Port Mourant Market. Police said the men were confronted and assaulted by two individuals armed with knives during a robbery.

Both victims sustained multiple injuries, including stab wounds, and were rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for medical treatment. Chen Yongping later succumbed to his injuries while receiving care. Cheng Dongrong suffered a fractured skull and was hospitalised, but has since been discharged.

A post-mortem examination conducted on December 24 determined that Chen Yongping died from shock and haemorrhage due to multiple stab wounds.

Investigations revealed that the suspects robbed the victims of one iPhone 12 Pro Max valued at $322,000, along with an undetermined sum of cash belonging to the deceased. Additionally, $150,000 in cash and another iPhone 12 Pro Max valued at $342,000—property of Cheng Dongrong—were also taken.

Commander Bacchus stated that all three suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
