Approval granted for restart of Berbice River bauxite operations -Dr. Singh
Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, announced today that the PPP/C administration has granted approval for the restart of bauxite operations in the Berbice River “just a few days ago”.
“Let me repeat Mr. Speaker, that just a few days ago, this People’s Progressive Party Civic government granted approval for the restart of bauxite operations in the Berbice River,” Singh told the House.
He reminded that operations had ceased in 2020, which he attributed to “the neglect and mismanagement of the sector by the APNU/AFC, chasing away the investors and abandoning the workers in the Berbice River.”
“Mr Speaker, in 2026 the operator will advance work to restore all critical systems so that production can safely and reliably recommence under this People’s Progressive Party Civic government by the end of 2027,” he said.
