CIOG, MYO back Budget 2026, points to transport grants for pensioners, schoolchildren
Faith-based bodies the Central Islamic Organization of Guyana (CIOG) and the Muslim Youth Organization of Guyana (MYO) have thrown their full support behind the 2026 National Budget, pointing to the introduction of transportation grants for pensioners and schoolchildren as a key intervention that directly eases daily costs for families.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the organizations said Budget 2026, themed “Putting People First,” reflects a people-centred and inclusive approach to national development, with measures that “support families, strengthen communities, and advance national progress” across multiple sectors.
“We particularly note the continued emphasis on welfare support and equity through cash grants… now further supported by the new initiatives of transportation grants to both pensioners and schoolchildren,” the statement said.
CIOG and MYO said the move builds on existing assistance such as increases in old-age pensions, enhanced public assistance and the Because We Care cash grants, providing what they described as “meaningful relief to families and vulnerable groups.”
The organizations also welcomed housing-related measures, including home construction grants and an increase in the low-income mortgage ceiling, noting that these initiatives could reduce costs for homeowners and encourage first-time home ownership.
On the economic side, CIOG and MYO pointed to tax and duty changes, including the removal of Value-Added Tax on vehicles below 1500cc, higher income tax thresholds, and reduced duties on double-cab pickups, as practical steps to ease transportation and living expenses for working families and small businesses.
They further welcomed the injection of US$100 million into the Guyana Development Bank, saying it would expand access to financing for small enterprises, farmers and entrepreneurs, while encouraging wider economic participation.
“The significant allocations for healthcare, education, infrastructure, housing, and agriculture demonstrate a commitment to sustainable development and human capital growth,” the statement said.
As faith-based organizations committed to social justice, community development and national unity, CIOG and MYO said they stand in full support of Budget 2026, which they believe will benefit both present and future generations.
