A fire in the check-in area of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on Sunday was swiftly contained by the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), averting what could have been a major disruption to the airport operations.

According to a press release issued by the airport authorities, the fire was detected in an air conditioning unit and is suspected to be electrical in nature.

The incident prompted the immediate evacuation of passengers and airport staff as a precautionary measure while the GFS conducted initial investigations.

Airport officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among passengers or staff.

At the time of the incident, the check-in process was underway for Caribbean Airlines flight BW527 and a Surinam Airways flight. While operations were briefly halted, authorities anticipate that normal check-in procedures will resume once the GFS completes its investigation and grants clearance.

CJIA said efforts are underway to restore full operations in the shortest possible time.
