A 38-year-old tattoo artist was remanded to prison on Friday after being charged with breaking into the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) daycare and preschool and stealing more than $277,000 worth of items.

Nicholas Choy, of Lot 168 Robb Street, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he was read a charge of break and enter and larceny under Section 229A of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.

Remanded: Nicholas Choy

The crime was allegedly committed on May 12, 2025, at the YWCA’s Croal Street facility in Georgetown.

According to the charge, Choy broke into the building and stole various household and school materials, including a $37,000 microwave, a $25,000 industrial fan, three mattresses worth $54,000, a $25,000 water dispenser, and $77,000 worth of school materials.

Other stolen items included a JBL speaker, garbage bags, a small fan, and a garbage bin, bringing the total value of stolen property to approximately $277,200.

Choy, upon hearing the charge, indicated that he wanted to speak and firmly denied any involvement, claiming his innocence.

Citing CCTV evidence purportedly showing Choy committing the break-in, the prosecution argued against bail. Investigators also allegedly found a number of the stolen items he was in possession of.

Choy was sent to prison until his next court date on June 6, 2025, after Magistrate McGusty refused bail based on the video evidence and the recovery of stolen property.
