GGMC to host lottery for mining lands in Regions 1, 7 and 8
The Ministry of Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), has announced that a lottery for the allocation of mining lands will be conducted across several regions next month.According to a public notice, the exercise will be held simultaneously at three locations, with each region assigned a specific date and venue. The lottery is scheduled for Region One on April 15, 2026, at the Matthews Ridge Community Centre; Region Seven on April 16, 2026, at the Bartica Community Centre Ground; and Region Eight on April 17, 2026, at the GGMC Mahdia Mines Station. Each session will begin at 10:00hrs.The notice outlined that “each region will have seventy-five (75) plots available, with each block comprising 50 acres,” providing an opportunity for individuals to access lands for mining activities. However, the GGMC made it clear that not all persons will qualify to participate. “Persons who currently hold small-scale claims, medium-scale permits, or large-scale mining tenures are not eligible to participate. Holders of existing mining tenure will be disqualified,” the notice stated.Additionally, the commission emphasised that “participants are allowed only one entry,” as part of efforts to ensure fairness and transparency in the allocation process.Interested persons are required to complete a registration process, which includes the submission of key documents such as a completed registration form, valid identification (Passport, National ID Card or E-ID Card), a Tax Identification Number (TIN) certificate or valid driver’s licence, and proof of address issued within the last six months.A non-refundable participation fee of $10,000 must also be paid. The GGMC advised that registration for the lottery will close on April 9, 2026.Registration forms can be uplifted from the GGMC Headquarters at High and Princes Streets, Georgetown, all GGMC mining stations, Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) stations in Regions One, Two, Three, Six and Ten, as well as online via the commission’s website.Successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement outlining the stipulated conditions for mining operations before being granted access to their allocated blocks. The commission encouraged all interested persons to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements and complete the registration process ahead of the deadline.
