A family is still waiting in anguish for word on two loved ones who remain missing following the MV Barima tragedy.
Roshanie Kisson told Sheriff News Network that her mother and stepfather were among those aboard the vessel when it capsized on Saturday night. She identified them as Bibi Mohammed and Ravindra Singh, also known as Mohamed Singh.
According to Kisson, the couple was heading to Port Kaituma, where they worked.
“They were heading up Port Kaituma,” she said. “They just work up there. They just buy clothes and wares and they just go up and work.”
Kisson said the family has not received confirmation from authorities about either of them. Relatives have been trying to identify recovered bodies, but so far, there has been no certainty.
“We haven’t heard nothing from none of them until we find them,” she said.
The daughter described her mother as short and fair-skinned, with mixed Indian and Amerindian features. She described her stepfather as short and dark-skinned.
“My mommy, she’s short and she’s a little clear-skinned. Sometimes she shows like a little Amerindian people,” Kisson said. “My father, he’s fine and short and he’s dark-skinned.”
She said both were well-known and well-liked, especially because of their work and movement through several communities.
“They’re very nice… and a lot of people know them,” she said.
Kisson said one body recovered appeared to resemble her mother, but relatives were having difficulty confirming the identity. She said the family was told the person had a similar complexion, reddish hair and a silver bangle.
“My cousin, they described somebody where she had a little colour. She had kind of red hair,” she said. “They were telling her that I was wearing a silver bangle. It was even kind of hard to identify her.”
She said relatives were expected to check again to determine whether the body was her mother.
“My cousin got him back for a check… see if it’s her again. Because she’s been very hard to identify,” Kisson said.
As search and recovery operations continue, Kisson said the family is desperate for answers and has still heard nothing about her stepfather.
“I hear nothing from my father,” she said.
The MV Barima tragedy has left several families across Guyana waiting for confirmation on missing relatives, as authorities continue efforts to recover victims and bring closure to grieving families.
