The government is on track to eliminate the housing backlog in nine regions by 2027 through an expanded housing programme, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo announced on Tuesday.
Speaking during a public day engagement at the Watooka Guest House in Region Ten, Jagdeo said additional lands acquired from the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL) will be developed into new housing schemes to accelerate the allocation of house lots.
He explained that while the government remains committed to utilising local contractors, foreign companies will also play a role in helping to meet its target of constructing more than 40,000 homes.
According to the Vice President, relying solely on local contractors would significantly slow the pace of the housing programme, making it more difficult to achieve the government’s housing targets.
Jagdeo also underscored the importance of strengthening standards within the construction sector, calling for improved licensing and contractor rating systems to enhance the quality of work and ensure greater accountability.
