Residents of La Parfaite Harmonie are set to benefit from major upgrades to infrastructure, public safety, recreational facilities and public amenities as the government advances its Model Village Initiative.
Speaking during the fifth community consultation held on Monday at Westminster Secondary School, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali outlined an ambitious vision to transform communities into modern, organised spaces designed to improve residents’ overall quality of life.
The President emphasised that the initiative is not intended to make every community identical but to ensure a consistent standard of development across Guyana.
“The transformation you see in Georgetown must be the transformation you live and experience in your own villages,” President Ali stated.
President Ali underscored the importance of placing people at the heart of the initiative, noting that residents must play an active role in shaping the future of their communities through consultation and shared responsibility.
“A community is not a place or a geographical location. A community is made up of people. People must be the centre of this development,” he stated.
Outlining the proposed vision for La Parfaite Harmonie, the President said approximately 245 acres will be transformed through upgraded roads, improved drainage systems, the installation of fire hydrants, CCTV surveillance, enhanced street lighting, green spaces, recreational facilities, improved signage, food courts, markets and other public amenities.
The pilot area comprises 61 roads, approximately 937 households, one school, one health centre, two places of worship, 29 businesses and four green spaces, all of which are expected to be integrated into a safer, cleaner and more organised community.
The initiative also includes plans for dedicated recreational parks, walking trails for senior citizens, children’s play areas, improved drainage infrastructure and designated commercial spaces aimed at improving both safety and residents’ quality of life.
President Ali said the initiative extends beyond physical infrastructure and is equally focused on strengthening values, social cohesion and community pride through partnerships with churches, mosques, temples and residents.
