The Government of Guyana is set to launch a coastal housing initiative aimed at providing homes for elderly and other vulnerable persons who are unable to build houses on their own.
Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo announced the initiative on Tuesday during a meeting with residents of Region 10 at the Watooka Guest House, stating that the programme fulfills a commitment outlined in the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) manifesto.
“We are launching a programme now for people who are really destitute, like people who have been abandoned by their families, those who are extremely poor, those who are [differently abled] and can’t afford to build.
The government will build some small one-bedroom houses for them,” Dr Jagdeo said.
The Vice President explained that the initiative will target persons facing severe financial and personal challenges, providing housing support to those who cannot afford to construct homes independently.
He said the programme forms part of the government’s broader efforts to address housing needs among vulnerable groups across the country
