Travel between Georgetown and Lethem is set to become cheaper following the introduction of a scheduled charter service by BK International and JAGS Aviation.
The service is offering fares more than 10 per cent below the current market rate, providing another travel option for persons moving between the capital and Region Nine.
The move comes amid calls by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali for airlines to lower domestic airfares, particularly for hinterland routes.
JAGS Aviation Reservations Manager Natasha Smith told the Department of Public Information (DPI) on Wednesday that the lower fares could make it easier for Lethem residents to travel to Georgetown for essential services and supplies.
“It not only opens up cheaper travel options for persons that live in Lethem to travel to Georgetown and back”, Smith said.
According to Smith, the company is also examining its pricing structure to bring fares down further.
Passengers are not the only ones expected to benefit. JAGS Aviation is also offering reduced cargo rates for goods transported between Georgetown and Lethem,
“We’re even offering cargo fares less than the market as well so that they can bring more items to and from Lethem and Georgetown. And it opens up the tourism market as well,” Smith explained.
The company is also looking at expanding the service to include stops in other communities in Regions Eight and Nine.
Further down the line, international connections to neighbouring countries, including Brazil, Suriname and Venezuela, are also being explored.
The additional air service is expected to support businesses and tourism operators in Region Nine by making it easier and cheaper to move people and goods between the hinterland and Georgetown.
