Ten farmers from various regions of Guyana have won tickets to witness a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) cricket match as part of a promotional initiative by agrochemicals producer UPL.
The winners were selected during a simple drawing ceremony held on Tuesday at the NARIE station in Lesbeholden, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice.
The ten winners are Mark Singh of East Bank Essequibo; Kavish Tumeshwa of Number 65 Village, Corentyne, Berbice; Krishna Prahalad of Hidernia Village, Essequibo; Jewan Gobin of Mahaicony Creek, East Coast Demerara; Sheik Dhanny; Naylon Newland of Den Amstel, Essequibo, West Coast Demerara; Balram Sharma; Leslie Abel of Kingerly Village, West Coast Berbice; Devi Sirpaul of Ruimzeight Village, West Coast Demerara; and Vishnudayal Lachhmah of Philadelphia, East Bank Essequibo.
Speaking to reporters, UPL Country Manager and Caribbean Region representative Deoram Prahalad said the initiative forms part of the company’s community-centred programmes.
He explained that UPL is sponsoring the ten farmers, who use Gainexa fertilizer, to attend a CPL match between Guyana and Trinidad at the National Stadium at Providence, Georgetown.
“We would give them accommodation and some gifts during that period of time where they would spend one night in Georgetown,” Prahalad said.
He disclosed that UPL plans to continue the promotion, with another drawing scheduled for March 2027. Winners from that promotion will have the opportunity to travel to India to witness two Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.
A further drawing is planned for August 2027, when another ten farmers will be selected to attend the CPL in Guyana.
“This is UPL’s way of giving back to the farmers who have been supporting us throughout the years,” Prahalad said.
He recalled that in 2024, twelve farmers from Guyana, Trinidad and Suriname were given the opportunity to witness a cricket match in India after a similar drawing was conducted in Region Five.
