Goed Bananen Land man dies at 106

Goed Bananen Land, East Canje resident Harold Bissoo, who recently celebrated his 106th birthday, has died.

Bissoo passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, four months after marking the milestone surrounded by family and loved ones.

Born on April 8, 1920, to Bharosi and Chowrasia, Bissoo spent most of his life in Goed Bananen Land. He married Bephia, and the couple had two children, one of whom survives him. His wife passed away in 2005.

He leaves behind grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

Bissoo worked as a bull boy at Rose Hall Plantation before later spending many years farming and fishing. Despite experiencing mobility challenges and slight hearing difficulties in his later years, he remained surrounded by family and caregivers.

For many years, he was cared for by Geetaa Kishun, who remained by his side until his passing.

His granddaughter, Shamain Amin, told Sheriff News Network that while the family is saddened by his death, they are grateful that he lived long enough to celebrate his 106th birthday.

Amin said Bissoo began feeling unwell two days ago and stopped eating. She described him as a responsible and hardworking man who dedicated his life to providing for his family.

“He loved to play cricket, and as grandchildren growing up, we were deeply loved by him,” Amin said.

She also praised Kishun, whom the family affectionately called “Teto,” for playing an important role in Bissoo’s care over the years.

“He will be missed by all of us, especially Teto,” Amin added.
