A routine trip to a nearby shop turned tragic for a 30-year-old No. 5 Village, West Coast Berbice man on Saturday morning when he was struck by a lorry and killed.
Dead is Steve McAlmont, a construction worker of No. 5 Village, West Coast Berbice.
The accident occurred at about 11:30 hours on the No. 5 Public Road, near the bridge linking No. 5 and No. 4 Villages.
Police said 27-year-old Joseph Wilson, of Lot 69 Glasgow Village, East Bank Berbice, was driving motor lorry GAR 4204 east along the roadway at approximately 50 kilometres per hour when McAlmont reportedly ran across the road from north to south and entered the vehicle’s path.
The impact reportedly caused McAlmont to be dragged for approximately 40 feet before coming to a stop in the vicinity of No. 4 Village.
Citizens who witnessed the incident rushed to McAlmont’s assistance and transported him to the Bath Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His brother, Tony Khan, said the family is devastated by the sudden loss.
Khan said McAlmont suffered injuries to his back and both feet. He explained that McAlmont had just left a nearby shop and was making his way onto the road shortly before the fatal collision.
“We are very hurt about it,” Khan said.
The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation as police continue their inquiries.
