The Government is considering several measures to tackle noise nuisance across Guyana, including helping established bars and nightclubs invest in soundproofing and introducing a system for operators of open-air venues to monitor their noise levels.
President Dr Irfaan Ali said the approach is intended to address complaints from residents while ensuring businesses in the entertainment sector can continue operating.
Speaking at a recent news conference, Ali said noise nuisance is “affecting the quality of life of people” and requires a balanced response.
Among the options being considered is support through the Guyana Development Bank for existing bars and nightclubs to invest in noise-control infrastructure.
Attention is also being placed on open-air entertainment venues.
Ali said the Government intends to work with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on a mechanism that would allow operators to monitor sound levels and regulate their operations before enforcement becomes necessary.
Meanwhile, a task force has already been established to examine noise nuisance across all regions and is working with the Guyana Police Force.
According to the President, the move follows complaints about the lack of police response to reports of excessive noise at the community level.
“We have also established, after consultations, a task force that is looking at the issue around across all regions, working with the police,” Ali said.
