Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Honourable Priya Manickchand alongside Permanent Secretary Miguel Choo-Kang today met with vendors operating along Woolford Avenue to discuss arrangements that would allow them to benefit from the ongoing development of the area while addressing concerns arising from recent infrastructure works.
Woolford Avenue recently benefited from the first phase of significant upgrades, including an expanded road and developed drainage. These works resulted in the displacement of some vendors operating along the corridor, prompting discussions on how vending can be better organised within the developing space.
During the engagement, Minister Manickchand emphasised that the removal of vendors was not the objective of the works.
She said the focus is now on restructuring arrangements in a manner that balances the needs of vendors with the wider development of Woolford Avenue, ensuring that persons who depend on vending for their livelihoods are not sidelined.
The Minister listened to concerns and recommendations from vendors and discussed possible solutions, including exploring more organised and standardised vending structures that complement the upgraded surroundings.
Discussions also addressed the relationship between roadside vendors and canteens operating at nearby schools, as well as existing challenges vendors face in securing the necessary approvals to operate.
As part of efforts to arrive at a workable solution, further engagement will be held with vendors, canteen operators and Head Teachers to determine an arrangement that considers the interests of all parties while maintaining safety, order and the improvements made along Woolford Avenue.
Minister Manickchand reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to people-centred development, emphasising that progress should improve communities while fostering opportunities for the people who live and earn within them.
