Man pleads guilty to attempting to kill wife after she refused to get intimate

A woman’s decision to decline her husband’s advances ended in a brutal attack that left her with serious head injuries, the High Court in Demerara heard.

The man accused of the attack, Seon Joseph, admitted his actions in court, entering a guilty plea to attempting to commit murder.

Joseph appeared before Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif, who accepted his plea.

The incident dates back to July 31, 2023, when Joseph sought to have sexual intercourse with his wife. The woman, who told him that she was not feeling well, refused.

The court heard that Joseph then assaulted her, inflicting an open fracture to the left side of her head as well as several lacerations.

The severity of the injuries resulted in the woman being hospitalised for several days.

With Joseph’s guilty plea accepted, the matter will now proceed to sentencing.

The court also ordered the relevant reports to be presented ahead of sentencing, while the prosecution was directed to submit the aggravating factors in the case and the defence to provide the mitigating factors.

Justice Chandra-Hanif has set September 30, 2026, for Joseph to return to court to learn his sentence.
